4th XV fall asleep in the second half against Murrayfield
Kenny "Silver Fox" Campbell enthusiastically volunteered to write this week's match report and amusingly, decided to ignore the Ed.'s spectacular try saving tackle to focus on a possibly less distinguished action:
Well the Mighty Bosch is finally starting to look like a team again with a reasonably settled group of forwards and the backs as ever a ramshackle bunch thrown together at the last minute, we even had the luxury of substitutes this week and against a side smattered with youth and experience this was a welcome change.
Once again we got off to flyer with an early score from Mr Mathewson with the conversion unashamedly sent high and right. This was a trend set to continue throughout the match.(If Mr McDougall wishes to continue with the kicking duties I think he should invest in a tee.)
With the wind and slope firmly in our favour for the first half we took full advantage by not kicking and trying to run everything. With the optimism of a television cameo performance being discussed prior to kick off the boys continued to play with gay abandon in hope of their fifteen minutes(seconds) of fame and played a classy champagne style 25% pace game of flowing rugby.
There was a split second of fear when our coach/manager/player?? Rod Hathaway was felled like a dwarf conifer letting out the scream of a four year old girl but as usual, it was merely a pulled eyelash and the scream was for attention and nothing more.
(For someone who isn’t allowed to play rugby by order of his husband he should be keeping a little quieter on the pitch.)
With Euan(sick-note)Lyster going off again!! after 20 minutes it was just as well there were substitutes. John Maclelland filled in seamlessly and the scrum was firmly on top.
With further tries from Mcdougall, Mathewson (2) and A.N.Other we were determinedly on the front foot at the break.
It would seem that after half time playing into the wind as happened last week, it was time to step back and allow the opposition to run at us and give us some tackling practice. Some might say this is badly needed within the team but after an early try in the first half the remainder of the half was spent primarily in our half.
With exception of a couple of marauding runs from Martin Macari there was little respite for the defence and we did our best to throw away a very healthy lead.
We had a glimpse of the former glory days of Philippe Blanco who side stepped and jinked his way through the opposition and with The Silver One screaming at him for a pass on the approach of Philippe’s opposite number it was a side step too far. By his own admission Serge (I’ve come this far look there’s the try line 50m away) was quoted as saying I really should have passed there at least twice. (But you never!! not that I’m bitter)
And so it was backs to the wall again.
With the game fizzling out to quiet puppy yelp the last word went to the opposition with a try down to what can only be described as opportunism. Our makeshift backline was undone by a clever move and inexperience left us short on cover and in they went. It was a disappointing end but we hung on to a deserved victory
