Hot Ayr breeze past cold Watsonians
The imagination of match correspondents will never cease to amaze the Ed. This week, ace reporter Gary Heatly provides a copy/paste of his own report:
With my hands and feet having just recovered from the freezing cold which greeted us all at Myreside on Saturday afternoon, I have not had time to piece together a full article for the website, but here are a few of my musings and my report which appeared in Monday’s Scotsman.
Watsonians 10 Ayr 13
Coach Cammy Mather and Co will have been bitterly disappointed on Saturday evening after losing a close match against old rivals Ayr.
The side had enough ball in the second half as they tried to overturn a 13-3 deficit, but after a super try from winger Rohan Steyl the side could not push on and mistakes were made in attacking areas when more tries looked a distinct possibility.
It was a good game of rugby to watch, but that will not matter a jot to the players who will be hurting at the moment after the team slipped to sixth in the table. Currie await at Malleny Park on Saturday.
Here is what appeared in the Scotsman;
Ayr held on for a precious 13-10 win at Myreside on Saturday, the Millbrae men defending superbly late on as they secured their fourth league triumph in a row.
All of the visitors' points were scored in the first half, centre Julien Montoro going over for a try and stand-off Kenny Diffenthal slotting a conversion and two penalties.
Watsonians, whose only points before the break came from a penalty by stand-off Andrew Skeen, improved markedly in the second half but could not overturn a ten-point deficit as the visitors moved up to third in the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership Division One table.
Ayr built up a 6-0 lead after 17 minutes through two Diffenthal penalties and they had the upper hand in the forwards. Whenever Watsonians got the ball, Ayr seemed to turn it over and it was soon 13-0.
There looked little trouble when Frenchman Montoro picked up the ball in Watsonians territory but he took advantage of some poor tackling by back-row Jonny Pelter and full-back Craig Sorbie to go over.
After clawing their way back to 13-3 at half time, the home side scored a good try in the 53rd minute through winger Rohan Steyl.
