Muir's record goes to old rivals

BOROUGHMUIR lost their unbeaten record in dreadful weather to local rivals Watsonians, whose two tries against three penalties earned them a famous win. It will delay rather than derail the Boroughmuir league winning juggernaut but, after a disappointing season to date, Watsonians will savour the moment.

The match was effectively won by a Steve Lawrie try on the 60-minute mark. Up to that point Watsonians had been defending a ten point lead since the tenth minute of the match and their advantage was now down to just one after three Muir penalties. Visiting flyhalf Matt Cannon spilled the ball in the midfield and Rory Coupar failed to deal with the ball when it was hacked upfield. Watsonians won it back, moved it quickly right and Lawrie was untouched as he sprinted to the corner. Skeene's excellent conversion gave the home team an eight point lead.

Announcing the SRU's recent five-year plan for rugby the head of community rugby Colin Thomson was at pains to underline the "fun" and "enjoyment" aspect of the game. Those two elements were notable by their absence yesterday at Myreside when a constant downpour of rain and snow made conditions miserable for players and spectators alike.

|
This was a fiercely fought local derby with something for everyone. Tries, yellow cards, the odd scrap and a surprisingly amount of running rugby given the almost impossible conditions. If they were to interrupt Boroughmuir's season-long winning sequence the home team would need to be first out of the blocks and sure enough Watsonians raced into a ten-point lead despite seeing little enough of the ball in the opening quarter.

Skeene calmed the nerves with an early penalty after a sublime break by the Samoan centre Mala Mialo had broken the line. Stewart Waddell the man guilty of slowing release at the breakdown. The centre was not quite so clever when tackling Muir's young winger Tom Bury and attempting to take his head home as a souvenir. The referee decided that a penalty was punishment enough although the vocal visiting supporters did not agree.

|
It was just as well for the home team that they kept their Samoan on the field since he played a key role in the opening try. Making light of appalling conditions Watsonians continued the good work with a touchdown on ten minutes that came straight from the training ground. Carl McWilliam came off his left wing to take the inside pass and split the defence, Miala was on his shoulder to carry the move on and he off-loaded for Dougie Brown to carry two defenders over the line with him.
