ONLY one point separated these two sides prior to the Scottish Hydro Electric Premier 1 encounter at Millbrae, but early indications were that Ayr would leapfrog the Myreside men.

A bonus point could have been in the bag for Craig Redpath's side after 25 minutes had they taken several clear chances but the scoreboard showed a lead of only 7-5.

Colin White had snaffled a poor Watsonians throw 20 yards out then burst through three tackles to go over for Boris Fournials to convert but when Ally Rowe got the touch to Mike Ker's kick ahead in the 25th minute, confidence returned to Watsonians' game.

|
Rohan Steyl sped over the line three minutes into the second half, and although Fournials then levelled with a penalty, five minutes later Rowe scampered in after the big men had done the damage in a midfield surge.
|
|
|
|
Referee David Jack opted to award a penalty rather than a penalty try for a deliberate knock-on ten yards from the visitors' line, and although Fournials nailed the penalty to reduce the gap to two points, poor defending by Ayr let Dougie Brown cross with five minutes to go for the bonus try. And when Steyl grabbed his second on 80 minutes it was no more than Watsonians deserved.

Florian Marin snatched an injury-time score for Ayr which gave them the losing bonus.
