IT may have taken Hawick deep into injury time to seal an opening victory, but with one of the youngest sides ever to wear the green jersey, the win was gained on merit, performance and team spirit.

With players defecting to the city clubs, coach Jim Hay must have approached the match with some apprehension.
|

However, the young prodigies rose to the occasion, none more so than props Nicky Little and Sean Linton, while the back division, with new captain Rory Hutton leading by example, posed constant problems.

"They played with tremendous heart for such a young side and the performance will give them a lot of belief and confidence," said Hay.

|
|
Watsonians were hampered by injuries to Mike Ker and Josh Abraham, but coach Cammie Mather still insisted it "was a terrible performance."

|
The injuries caused an extra seven minutes to be added on in which Daniel Landels burst through under the posts for a try converted by Craig Neish, who then kicked a penalty.

|
|
Watsonians led 9-6 at the interval with two Dougie Brown penalties and one by Ker to two successful Neish kicks.

|
Three Neish penalties after the break put Hawick ahead before Ally Rowe broke away to score, Brown converted and the visitors were back in front. But such was the Hawick pressure the scores in injury time were well deserved.
