Watsonians won the Earlston Sevens at The Haugh on Sunday.
The result means that if Watsonians can win the Jed Sevens this coming Saturday and Selkirk lose in the first round to Boroughmuir then the Myresiders will be crowned King of the Sevens.
It may be a big ask, but nevertheless the squad has done well to get back into contention with wins at Peebles and now Earlston.
In the first round on Sunday the squad saw off Berwick 14-7. A try by Andrew Skeen after a good break by Ali Rowe gave ‘Sonians the lead but it was 7-7 at the break. Replacement Craig Sorbie scored the winner in the second half while Mike Ker converted both scores.
They then saw off losing Scottish Hydro Electric Cup finalists Heriot’s in round two.
Guy Hills opened the scoring with a converted try, but Jon Alston replied for Heriot’s to make it 7-5. Skeen then scored after a great team move and when Ali Rowe showed fleet of foot to make it 1-5 the match seemed in the bag.
Alston completed his hat-trick thought either side of the beak and Watsonians had to hold on to go through 21-19.
In the semi Rowe got two and Skeen was also on the score sheet as ‘Sonians hit form to see off Kelso 26-5 and set up a final against old rivals Selkirk.
Watsonians were quick out the blocks in the last match, Doug Brown and that man Rowe again scoring tries converted by Ker to build up a 14-0 lead.
Selkirk then clawed back to 14-10 but it was 19-10 by the interval, Doug Brown getting his second of the match.
Rowe then got his second shortly after the break after clever work from Skeen and although Selkirk again pegged the Edinburgh men back to 24-17 it was to be Watsonians day.
The last two tries came from Skeen and Rowe, completing his hat-trick, and Gav Brown was named player of the tournament.
The last event at Jed starts at 1.30pm this Saturday with Watsonians taking on Melrose in round one.
Winning squad: Gav Brown, Guy Hills, Doug Brown, Eddie Howe, Mike Ker, Andrew Skeen, Ali Rowe, Craig Sorbie, Torie Callander, Euan Clark.
