First VII reach last eight at Melrose

The first VII lost to Heriot's in the last eight at the Melrose Sevens on Saturday.

In the first round the Kings of the Sevens saw off rivals Hawick with a stunning performance. Craig Sorbie opened the scoring and further tries followed before the break from Ally Hogg, Sorbie again and Mike Ker. Further tries in the second half came from Scotland Sevens international Mike Fedo and Richard Minto as it finished 42-5.

In the quarter-final tie Sorbie opened the scoring in the first half and Ker converted, but Heriot's fought back to lead 10-7 at half-time and score two more after the break to win 22-7.

Hamilton from Cape Town won the event and despite the last eight exit players and other members enjoyed Saturday vening back at Myreside with the threes after their end of season court session.

Melrose Sevens squad: Ally Hogg, Craig Sorbie, Mike Fedo, Jamie Blackwood, Mike Ker, Rchard Minto, Grant Somerville. Subs: Marcus Di Rollo, Max Learmonth, Jonny Pelter.

This coming weekend squads will be at Hawickand Berwick on Saturday and Sunday. Other sevens are also due to be at Edinburgh Northern and North Berwick with the first XV also playing their crucial final match of the eason at Melrose.
