Win at Penicuik Sevens

On: 2010-04-25 20:39:38

WFC installed its first piece of silverware of the 2009/10 season on Saturday after a hard fought battle at the Penicuik Sevens, beating Hawick Linden in the final.

Twenty-five tries across the piste and twenty Jamie Niven conversions secured the President's Cup for the maroon and white visitors - the first time since 1999.

Keen to settle the score with Lismore who had knocked the Myreside squad out of the Northern Sevens the previous week, tries from Scott, Trotter, Niven and Wilson saw a 49-0 victory over the boys from Newington and a place in the cup quarter finals.

Hawick Harlequins proved a tough challenge with a narrow three point victory by the final whistle, with tries from Niven, Findlater, Barry and Wilson. Enough however to book a place in the semis during which Niven, Blyth and Wilson scored tries, enabling a clean sheet victory against hosts Penicuik.

The pièce de résistance however was left until the final against Borderers Hawick Linden. The game provided all you could expect from a sevens cup final with a score line and intensity only usually witnessed in the XV-a-side game. Three Findlater tries, two from Niven and one from Blyth meant that the despite a 21 point lead, 'Sonians managed to hang on to win the Grand Prix of the day by four points.
